Those living in the Aldersley area of Wolverhampton won’t have failed to notice live events at Aldersley Leisure Village in 2018 and again this year. Events at Aldersley are becoming an annual occurrence. This comes following the commencement of renovation work at the Civic Halls in Wolverhampton centre. Live events could feature at Aldersley for at least another year as the Civic Hall venues will not be reopening until at least 2021 – a sore point for city centre businesses missing out on vital night time economy trade.
Live events at Aldersley this year include Frank Skinner’s ‘Showbiz’ tour which took place on 29 October. The 2019 Grand Slam of Darts is still to come between November 9-17. Last year also saw Aldersley Leisure Village host live shows. The Grand Slam of Darts and names such as Jason Manford, Sarah Millican, Dave Gorman and Joe Lycett graced the venue in 2018.
As well as live events, film lovers were treated to a half term treat. A pop-up cinema event was held, featuring the likes of The Greatest Showman, Lego Movie 2 and Rocketman over Halloween weekend.
Transformation
The main hall of the centre has been transformed to hold live events at Aldersley, but this does come at the expense of leisure village users. WV Active members are having to make use of the centre at different times and in some cases, not at all whilst events and shows are ongoing. City of Wolverhampton Council have put out detailed opening times and information on alternative venues for use.
Centre users are accustomed to the venue being used for varying reasons. In recent years, Wolverhampton’s election count has taken place at Aldersley Leisure Village. This includes the most recent count for the local election on Thursday 2 May this year.
There is no information publicly available yet about whether this December’s general election count will take place at Aldersley.
