The Wolverhampton area has, since the ’60s at least, been a hotbed of musical talent, though some would argue that this died off during the twilight of the ’80s. There were a couple of exceptions to the lack of serious talent in the ’90s and ’00s, but the 2010s is seeing a rebirth in the quality of local bands and singers who call Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire home. If you follow the local music scene, you’ll be familiar with a few of these up and coming talents.
Particularly prominent in the local scene at present are Under A Banner, a five piece alt-folk-rock band based in Wolverhampton. Headed up by lyrical mastermind, Adam Broadhurst and with a settled line up, the band have released two albums and acoustic / live EPs, as well as regularly uploading live tracks for free download. Under A Banner have several festivals lined up in what promises to be an important year for the band. Catch them live to hear some brand new not-yet-released material as well as the chance to buy some of their excellent merchandise – a big favourite being the ‘green man’ design as displayed on the bands bass drum. You can certainly expect to hear something captivating and very original. Under A Banner are: Adam Broadhurst (Guitar + Lead Vocals), Tim Wilson (Drums, percussion + vocals), Si Hill (Bass), Jake Brooks (Guitar) and Kat Davis (Keyboards). Fresh from supporting old favourites Quill at the Robin 2 in Bilston, Under A Banner can next been seen performing an acoustic set at the Newhampton Inn in Whitmore Reans alongside Doozer McDooze at 7pm on 4th April. Another 5 piece band on the radar at present are Luke Wylde & The Japes, also Wolverhampton based and increasingly gaining airplay for their brand of indie and folk pop. The bands music has been described as ‘well crafted’ and ‘moving’. To give you an idea of what to expect, influences include The Smiths, Ray Lamontagne and Arcade Fire amongst others. The band have been featured on BBC Introducing as well as receiving further airplay and playing live sessions on air. Luke Wylde & The Japes are: Luke Wylde (Vocals + Lead guitar), Toni Ansell (Ukulele + Vocals), Mark Golden (Rhythm Guitar), Ed Butler (Bass) and Marty Gallagher (Drums).
